During the last week-end we received at our winery some folks with who I use to talk online while they share their knowledge about Port in the forum For the Love of Port and The Port Forum. As you can imagine, while sitting with people that love so much Port Wine like these new friends do, I felt like an ignorant. They have a deep knowledge about young, old and very old Port. Several brands and different years, almost everything had already passed by their tongues!
When they arrived at our winery, after had visited our main vineyard, Quinta Vale d’Agodinho, they tasted, in black glasses, a Rosé and a White Port. As some are very conservative about Port, it was interesting to see their reactions. They didn’t dislike, but they are generally not in love by Rosé Port!
Then I proposed a blind tasting of four different LBVs 2003. The one from Quevedo achieved very good results. Finally, and already at Quinta do Passadouro, where we had dinner, I had the pleasure to taste some very old Vintage Ports and a handful of Vintages 07. Between the 5 Vintage Port over 38 years old, my preferred were the Fonseca 1966, followed by the Graham’s 1948. What two stunning Ports, very different but incredibly nice! Durante o último fim -de-semana recebemos na nossa adega a visita de algumas pessoas com quem costumo falar online, enquanto partilham o seu conhecimento sobre Vinho do Porto nos fóruns For the Love of Port e The Port Forum. Como conseguirão imaginar, estando sentado no meio de pessoas que vivem o Vinho do Porto como estes novos amigos, senti-me como um ignorante. Têm um vasto e profundo conhecimento sobre Portos novos e velhos. Diferentes marcas e anos, quase todas as grandes colheitas já lhes passaram pela boca!
Quando chegaram à nossa adega, depois de termos visitado a nossa principal quinta, Vale d’Agodinho, fizemos uma prova, em copos pretos, de um Porto Rosé e um Porto Branco. Como alguns são muito conservadores em relação a Vinho do Porto, foi interessante ver as reacções que tiveram. Não desgostaram, mas em geral não se apaixonaram por Porto Rosé.
Depois propus que fizéssemos uma prova cega de diferentes LBVs 2003. O LBV da Quevedo teve óptimos resultados. Finalmente, e isto já na Quinta do Passadouro, onde fomos jantar, tive o prazer de provar alguns Vintages muito velhos e uma mão cheia de Vintages 2007. Entre os 5 diferentes Vintages com mais de 38 anos de idade, os meus preferidos foram o Fonseca 1966 seguido do Graham’s 1948. Que dois belos Vinhos do Porto, muito diferentes mas incrivelmente agradáveis! Obrigado Derek, Alex, Andy, Julian and Christopher!
