Oscar’s White 2020

88/100
Mark Squires

The 2020 Oscar’s Branco is a screw-capped blend of 70% Viosinho, a big jump this year, and dollops of Rabigato, Gouveio, Arinto and Códega for the rest, all unoaked and coming in at 13% alcohol. (Kudos to the winery for being transparent about the blend right on the label.) A little green but not a lot, this is a classic summer white, light, bright and refreshing. It adds a little tension on the finish to go with its reasonably solid mid-palate, relative to the style. Drink this young for best results. It is the type of wine that relies on its exuberance, no matter how long it theoretically ages. It’s worth leaning up on it today. June 2021.

Winemaking Details

The year of 2020 was considered an year dry. The rain that felt in the spring brought a lot of diseases to the vines, therefore, the winegrowers had more work and care in the treatment of the vineyards. Despite these problems, the quality and quantity of grapes was very good, with great level of sugar, acidity and aromas. We picked these grapes in the beginning of the harvest that started at 24th of August, earlier than last year. Grapes were hand picked, totally destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks with soft hand macerations and with temperature controlled. 25% of the lot aged 6 months in French oak barrels. Drink between 8 and 10ºC
