Claudia’s Reserve White

Claudia’s Reserve is a careful selection from the grapes of our best Quintas. We do not follow a recipe, the composition will vary from year to year as we express what nature gives us. This white wine is slightly oaky and rich like pastry and cream, but beautifully balanced by a clean acidity and mineral finish.

Claudia’s Reserve White 2019

90/100
Mark Squires

The 2019 Claudia’s Branco Reserve is a blend of 33% Viosinho, 23% Fernão Pires, 17% each of Rabigato and Gouveio and the rest Arinto, all aged for eight months in an equal mixture of one-third new French and Hungarian oak. It comes in at 13.3% alcohol. Elegant and fresh, this still has surprising persistence on the very respectable finish. It handles the new wood pretty well, and that should continue to get better. It is not the most concentrated Reserve, but it doesn’t feel thin, and it coats the mouth nicely. Overall, this is lovely, and its structure suggests that there is some room for improvement over the next couple of years. It does need to prove it can hold and develop a little to justify my enthusiasm, but it’s worth leaning up for the moment. June 2021.

Winemaking Details

Viticulture:
The year of 2019 presented a wide variation of temperatures and lower rainfall than average, turning it into a dry year. At the beginning, growth cycle started earlier but throughout the late Spring and Summer months it slowed down. Despite the heavy rain of April, the weather conditions evolved well and we got healthy bunches at harvest. We picked the grapes for this white wine at the very last days of August and the first week of September. Grapes were hand picked.

Fermentation:
Grapes were gently crushed and fermented in stainless steel tank between 15ºC – 18ºC.

Aging:
After fermentation, we aged it for 6 months on fine lees in French oak.

Winemaker:
Teresa Batista
