Claudia’s Reserve Red

Claudia’s Reserve is produced from a careful selection of grapes from our best Quintas. We don’t follow a recipe, the composition will vary from year to year, as we blend what nature gives us. The 2020 red displays the elegant and pure style of Douro, while respecting its wild roots.

Wine Advocate

89/100

The 2020 Claudia’s Reserve is mostly a blend of Tinta Roriz (42%) and Touriga Franca (44%), with Touriga Nacional for the rest, aged for 11 months in 23% new French oak. It comes in at 14% alcohol. This has some structure and seriousness, although it is a laid-back Reserva. At a reasonable price point, it offers lots of value, and it would be my pick of the table wines from the winery this time for a combination of value and quality. There’s a serious backbone, good depth and a fruit-forward demeanor. The tannins don’t get in the way of that nice fruit. I doubt this is going to develop into anything much more distinguished, but it’s a nice offering for a reasonable price that can easily be a good house pour or restaurant wine. It should hold throughout the decade, maybe more, but long aging is not the point here. It drinks decently now and will probably be near peak next year.

Winemaking Details

Viticulture:
The year 2020 experienced unusual heat throughout all seasons but with adequate levels of rainfall, resulting in good, albeit rapid, grape maturation. The harvest began in August and was brief, ensuring that the grapes were picked at their ideal level of maturity.

Fermentation:
This blend was created after malolactic fermentation, using the wine from our three vineyards that best fit this profile.

Aging:
The wine was 61% aged in stainless steel and 39% in French oak barrels, with a size of 500 liters, for 11 months. Of the barrels used, 77% were previously used and 23% were new.

Winemaker:
Teresa Batista
